About

The oceans and fjords around Greenland and neighboring countries are of critical importance to economy and ecology. The fishery of Prawn and Greenland halibut is the dominant industry of Greenland, and the subsea slopes and canyons are hotspots for marine biodiversity, some of them vulnerable. A strong factor is the terrain below the surface of the sea.

The GINR service of the NATO SPS Cube4EnvSec project aims at 3D datacubes of the Arctic which can be queried for depth and terrain characteristics (slope, aspect, ruggedness). This type of data is openly available and used within the fields of science, however rarely implemented in operational situations where decisions are made on ship routes for exploiting the fishery resources or protect vulnerable wildlife from disturbance. In future, further marine information could be added such as tide water model, AIS shipping monitoring, and sea surface temperature, which are all factors of relevance to fishery, biology and general route planning.
